Mitte is the most central part of Berlin (Mitte is German for centre). It also includes the vast majority of Berlin’s historic centre and most of the tourist attractions such as the Reichstag and the Brandenburg Gate. Since 2001, Mitte has come to be, not just the former East German borough of Mitte, but a new borough which also includes Wedding and Tiergarden, these were formally in West Berlin.
Mitte is one of the most attractive places in Berlin for investment and much of the overseas investment that Berlin has seen in the last few years has gone into Mitte.
Over the last few years, property prices have gone up in Mitte, meaning that for property investors, prices have gone up and rental yields have gone down. However, this doesn’t seem to have stopped people short-listing this area when considering a home in Berlin. After all, where else in Europe can you buy an apartment so close to the major tourist attractions for so little?
