Kreuzberg’s near neighbour and borough-partner is Friedrichshain. Friedrichshain was also its own district until 2001, when it became part of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. While not as poor as Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain is also home to cheap rents, run-down areas and numerous squats. It’s also home to a lively counter-culture.
However, over the last few years, Friedrichshain has become increasingly gentrified with bars, cafes and restaurants opening, catering to a large population of students and artists. Simon-Dach-Strasse is the lively centre and one of the best places to go out in all of Berlin making Friedrichshain very “up and coming”.
