Berlin is a vast city, this coupled with it’s unusual twin-centre history mean that no neighbourhood or borough is the same as another. In this section, we’ll take a look at the main neighbourhoods which make up Europe’s second most populous city.
Berlin is made up of 12 boroughs, or Bezirke in German, there used to be 23 but they were reorganised in 2001 to help save on expenditure, this gave birth to amalgamated boroughs such as “Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf”. Despite this, when talking about the neighbourhoods that make up the city, Berliners still to refer to the old boroughs and treat the new ones as merely administrative titles. You will also here Berliners talk about their “Kiez”, this is something different again, a small locality defined not by the local government but by the people that live there - their local neighbourhood as they perceive it.

The above map shows you the old boroughs and where they lie within the city limit. Below you will find a synopsis of the borough and a link to read the full description.
